Domestic Spending, unraced since August 2021, could be a “surprise entry” in the Breeders’ Cup Mile.
Trainer Chad Brown told Jennie Rees, publicist for the Kentucky Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association, that the 5-year-old gelding is “training pretty good off the layoff.”
Domestic Spending breezed five furlongs in 1.01.0 at Keeneland Saturday, the fastest of four at the distance. Before his Kentucky work, he had been training at Saratoga since August.
The son of Kingman had a record of 8: 6-1-1 and earnings of $1.4 million before he was scratched ahead of the 2021 Breeders’ Cup Turf because of inflammation in a foreleg.
In three starts last year, he won the Turf Classic (G1) and Manhattan (G1) before finishing second by a neck to Two Emmys in the Mr D (G1). In 2020, he won the Hollywood Derby (G1).
