Liverpool fans have been left fuming after finding out who will take charge of their clash against Manchester City.
On Saturday afternoon, Jurgen Klopp’s men will travel to the Etihad Stadium for a crucial Premier League clash against leaders City.
Pep Guardiola’s men currently hold a narrow one-point lead at the top of the table and are looking to continue their fine home league form against Liverpool.
Ahead of the weekend’s matches, the referee for each match has been confirmed.
It has been revealed that Chris Kavanagh will take charge of City vs Liverpool, with Stuart Attwell on VAR.
Reacting to the news, Liverpool fans have been left fuming over Kavanagh’s appointment.
On social media, one said: “Chris Kavanagh, whose brother reportedly owns a season ticket for Man City, has been appointed referee for Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off.”
Another tweeted: “Greater Manchester’s Chris Kavanagh eh…”
A third fan added: “Chris Kavanagh, whose brother reportedly owns a season ticket for Man City, has been appointed referee for Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off. Yh incoming Man city win.”
Someone else joked: “Chris Kavanagh, from Manchester, will referee our game against City. And Noel Gallagher will be in charge of VAR…”
Despite Liverpool fans’ fury, the Reds actually have a decent record when Kavanagh has taken charge of their matches.
According to This Is Anfield, Kavanagh has officiated Liverpool on 15 occasions, with the Anfield club winning 13 and losing just twice.
Liverpool have also won their last six matches with Kavanagh as the referee, including wins against West Ham United and Nottingham Forest this season.
Klopp will be desperate to win at the Etihad Stadium but their record at City’s home ground has been dismal.
Liverpool’s only league victory away at City with Klopp in charge came in 2015 when the likes of Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho and Martin Skrtel scored in a 4-1 win.
