New research from the team at Airbnb has unveiled some of this year’s top trending destinations based on searches on the booking platform.
According to the team, Cascais, a seaside town in sunny Portugal, is this year’s most popular holiday destination.
Cascais is about a 45 minute drive from Lisbon or it takes around an hour from the capital city by train.
The seaside resort used to be a retreat for wealthy Portuguese and was a favourite destination of the country’s Royal Family.
So what is there to do in Cascais?
Once a small fishing village, the architecture in Cascais’ old town calls back to the town’s past.
‘PS00011’ wrote on Tripadvisor: “Very cute, wonderfully clean town with charming streets. Very pleasant and easy train ride from Lisbon.”
Guincho Beach is the town’s top-rated beach and is extremely popular with wind surfers and surfers.
The beach can be a bit unpredictable so it’s not an ideal swimming spot although it’s very beautiful to admire from the cliffs.
Visit Cascais Fish Market to see a vast array of local fish and seafood and pick up a treat for dinner.
Paula Rego is one of Portugal’s most renowned artists and tourists can visit Cascais art museum for an insight into her work.
Unsurprisingly seafood takes centre stage on the table in Cascais but steak sandwiches are also popular.
