Gopher Sports: Why did you choose the University of Minnesota?
Aiva Schmitz: I really liked coach Catrina, she is a great coach and person, and I felt like she truly cared about the girls on the team. Also, the campus and tennis facilities really impressed me and it was important to me that the “U” is so close to my family in MN!
GS: What are you planning on majoring in and why?
AS: I am currently majoring in Biochemistry, because my goal is to go to medical school and become an Ophthalmologist.
GS: What drives your passion for the game of tennis?
AS: I think my passion for tennis comes from my family. I saw that sports had been such a big part of my parents’ lives and saw how much happiness it brought them. My drive for tennis specifically comes from my dad. I loved watching him play tennis and always wanted to get good enough to beat him one day!
GS: Who is your role model?
AS: My role model is definitely my mom. She played division 1 basketball and was the MVP of her team going to NCAA, while also getting a good degree. I hope to be as successful in my 4 years as she was!
GS: What other hobbies do you possess?
AS: In my free time I like to spend time playing sports and games with my family. Also, one of my favorite hobbies is to bake and decorate cakes for family and friends’ parties.
GS: What do you look forward to the most when moving to Minnesota?
AS: What I’m most looking forward to here is the school spirit around Big Ten sports and getting to contribute to the gopher tennis team on court! I’m also very excited about being close to my family here in the Twin Cities.
